SHADE MATCHING
Skin tone vs. undertone: two different parts of a shade match
Published-information research · Not a hands-on review
Start with depth, then compare the brand’s undertone descriptions. A shade number alone does not tell you both.
A foundation can look about the right depth and still feel like the wrong color. Before moving lighter or darker, check whether you are changing the wrong part of your search.
Depth narrows the part of the range
Depth describes the lighter-to-deeper part of a shade range. e.l.f.’s shade guide treats this separately from warm, cool and neutral undertones. Use the terminology on the exact product page, because category names and shade codes need not carry across ranges.
Undertone narrows the color direction
The same brand guide associates warm undertones with golden, peach or yellow directions and cool undertones with pink, red or blue directions. These are descriptions for narrowing options, not a diagnosis we can make from a photograph. If several descriptions seem plausible, keep more than one candidate instead of forcing certainty.
Do not assume that an undertone label is a universal color formula. A neutral shade in one product is not evidence that a similarly named shade elsewhere will match it.
Use evidence from a shade you already know
Write down the complete product and shade name of a base that matches you, including the version. Also record what you dislike: too pale, too deep, too pink or too golden. This turns “the shade was wrong” into a question a brand adviser can help with.
If the old product never matched, use it as a description of a problem rather than a reliable anchor. Avoid translating numbers between brands as though they were measurements.
Check a candidate in context
e.l.f. recommends checking near the jawline in natural light. Follow the product’s instructions when trying a sample and compare candidates under the same conditions. Our site does not offer a selfie matcher or an exact shade conversion.
If you are buying online, next check who sells the item and what their current return terms permit. A short, uncertain shortlist with a workable return route can be more useful than a confident-looking shade prediction.
